How deep is your foundation?
Refuge from the Storm by Kristina Hall is a thought-provoking Christian dystopian suspense novel that is part two of the Refuge series. You can read my review of book one: Fled for Refuge, here. Book two picks up several months after book one left off with the miraculous return of Tony Dorrence to the home he shares with his sister Merri.
Both siblings are plagued with doubts and trials, and as time goes on, they have to confront their past failures as well. When enemies of the past reappear, can they weather the storm or will their house fall?
Another great book by Kristina Hall!
Tony and Merri’s struggles really made me think. It’s difficult to know how we’d react if faced with the question of whether we’d die for our faith. Even harder would be to let a loved one die for our choice. Even in the midst of the horrors these characters faced, the Word of God was foremost in this story.
I appreciated the fact that Tony was able to rethink and repent of some of his past choices. I don’t want to give away too much because I don’t like spoilers, but I liked to see growth in him as a character. I was also glad to see Craig again, because of all the characters, I guess my heart just went out to him. I’m glad he’s given the opportunity to redeem himself.
The novel was clean, with no language and no romance. It was a bit of a tough read for this romance loving reader, because it centered around the doubts of Tony and Merri, which made it a bit bleak at times. There are some scenes that are somewhat violent due to parts of the plot that made it necessary. Again, I don’t want to include spoilers, but the violence wasn’t gratuitous, and it was limited to only a few scenes.
Overall, I would recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys Christian dystopian and suspense novels with a redemption arc. I’m looking forward to seeing how it all plays out in book three!
