Would you have the strength to stand if your faith became illegal?
Fled for Refuge by Kristina Hall is a Christian dystopian suspense novel which takes place in the not-so-distant future. It follows events in the life of brother and sister Tony and Merri and members of Tony’s church. You can purchase it on Amazon*, or you can find other purchasing options on Kristina’s website.
In Tony and Merri’s universe, religious freedom is a thing of the past. Criticizing the government could land a person in prison, essentially a death sentence. The food and water supply is poisoned. Life no longer has value.
A car crash at Tony’s church sets off a string of events that will test the faith of Tony and his pastor. Will they be able to cling to God as their refuge in the midst of the danger?
Merri isn’t saved, but she agrees with many of the ideas Tony’s church believes. But how can she believe in a God she can’t see? When his faith puts Tony’s life in danger and Merri gets dragged into the middle of it, can she lay aside her questions and find refuge in the only One who can save?
This book had my heart pounding from the first to the last chapter.
It held my attention, was fast paced, and was full of suspense. Although it is set in the future, it is easy to imagine a time when the events could unfold. It is a bone-chilling portrayal of what could happen if government overreach goes unchecked.
I particularly appreciated the faith arcs in this novel. Each character went through some kind of transformation, and it reminded me of the parable of the Sower in Mark 4 of the Bible. Each of the characters represented one of the types of people who heard the Word of God in the parable. Whether this was intentional on the part of the author or Holy Spirit led, it made the Christian aspect that much more compelling.
As she always does, Kristina included a lot of Scripture in this novel. It includes some violence, but it is mild and not glorified. The language is clean, and while there are characters in relationships, there isn’t much of a romantic arc in this particular novel.
Overall, I would highly recommend Fled for Refuge. I couldn’t put it down until I finished, even if I am a little miffed that I have to wait until the next book to find out what happens!
