Where do you turn when you don’t know who to trust and all hope seems lost?
Truth Unshaken by Kristina Hall is the action-packed, Christian historical suspense novel that wraps up The Moretti Trilogy series. It is set in the Prohibition era and follows Frank Ashton, Carla Belardi, and Alberto Moretti as their lives intersect in Moretti’s final showdown with the Belardi crime family and the Prohibition Unit he has been hired to work for.
When Carla Belardi discovers that everything she thought she knew about her life was a lie, she runs for her life, only to find herself recovering from life-threatening injuries with the Ashton family. Frank Ashton, who is in a unique position to understand her infirm, becomes a care-giver and then a friend to the woman who now has no one. As they grow closer, Frank must wrestle with the feelings he is developing for Carla, as well as those he has long let fester when he lost the use of his legs during the Great War.
Alberto Moretti, reformed criminal turned prohibition agent, gets thrown back into the world he left behind, and he must rely on God to guide him when he is faced with murderous criminals and crooked agents who threaten the safety of the new family he has built.
Can this unlikely group survive when it seems the whole world is out to see them killed?
Wow! This book grabbed my attention from the start and didn’t let me go until the end.
With plenty of nail-biting moments and likeable characters, it kept me engaged and wanting more. There were times I was smiling right along with the characters and times I was so angry with them I wanted to throw the book. It didn’t feel predictable, so even though I was confident in a HEA, I was still surprised by everything it took to get there.
Hall has a way of character building that really connected with me as a reader so I would care what happened to them. I especially appreciated the character Alberto Moretti, who reminds us that, even once we are saved we can still struggle with the sins of our past. He was real and honest, and that, more than anything, made me cheer for him all the way through.
This book was nicely done. I didn’t find any plot issues that I felt were unresolved. Hall’s writing style is engaging and concise.
As far as the “clean” aspect of the novel goes, the romance was chaste and appropriate, and there was no swearing. It did have a good amount of violence in it, but it is a book about mobsters, so I would say the violence is appropriate to the subject matter and not over-done or graphic.
Since the author did label this novel as Christian, I will comment to say that there are numerous scripture references, characters wrestle with issues of faith and Christian living, and there is a strong redemptive theme throughout this novel and the entire series. I would definitely characterize it as Christian fiction rather than “clean” fiction.
Overall, I highly recommend this novel and the entire Moretti Trilogy series.
